    Plaquenil immunosuppressive therapy

My husband has been taking Plaquenil (generic hydroxychloroquine) for almost 2 yrs., under a rheumatologist's care. He became very ill, and was diagnosed w/ viral meningial encephalitis. We were much later told that the Plaquenil had "lowered his tolerance to infection, as it is also an immuno-suppressant." In essence, the medicine allowed the viral infection to cross the barrier between his brain and blood/lungs.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, chloroquine Aralen, and quinacrine Atabrine are medications that were originally used to prevent or treat malaria. However, during World War II it was also found that these medications were effective in treating the symptoms of lupus. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. For this reason, you can think of antimalarials as a sort of “lupus life insurance.”

(He was never told of that risk when he was put on the medication.) Added : What I failed to mention (above) is that he almost died in April when this happened. His/our question is as to whether he can or should EVER go back on the medication and risk exposure to further illnesses if it is true that Plaquenil or the generic for is, in fact, an immuno-suppressant and presents a serious health risk for him?

  4. Your doctor may prescribe a mild medication first, such as hydroxychloroquine, sold as Plaquenil ®. This medication was originally formulated to prevent and treat malaria, but is now also classified as a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, or DMARD, which means it treats the underlying disease rather than its symptoms.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is an oral medication that is commonly used in the treatment of many types of autoimmune conditions including lichen planopilairs, frontal fibrosing alopecia, discoid lupus and pseudopelade. I’m often asked if hydroxychloroquine is an immunosuppressant or best classified as an immunomodulatory drug. The number of patients taking immunosuppressive drugs for the management of autoimmune inflammatory conditions is increasing. The general practitioner needs to be active in preventing, monitoring and managing the adverse effects of these drugs even long after the treatment has ceased. Treatment. There's no cure for dermatomyositis, but treatment can improve your skin and your muscle strength and function. The earlier treatment is started in the course of dermatomyositis, the more effective it is.
