Can i take plaquenil at night

When I do sleep, upon waking it feels like I never slept. Is this a common side effect and will it subside with time?

  5. Stars. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

Take Plaquenil exactly as prescribed. Plaquenil comes in tablet form. It is taken once or twice a day, unless it is used for the prevention of malaria, in which case it is taken once a week beginning 1 to 2 weeks prior to traveling to an area where malaria is common. Take this medication with a meal or a glass of milk to prevent stomach upset. Plaquenil doesn't usually cause insomnia. It is most likely something else, such as prednisone if you're taking it or anxiety. Insomnia is a common complaint for people with Lupus, some as a result of the steroids and some from general stress of the disease. Lupus is a difficult diagnosis to handle and can really make it difficult to fall asleep. I started plaquenil 200mg in the morning with breakfast and 200mg at night. My side effects were loss of appetite and nervousness/jittery, like anxiety. My side effects resolved after a few weeks. These days I tolerate plaq so well that I take 400mg once a day at night now. It's a great drug if you can work through the initial side effects.
