Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. This medication is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells.

What is the difference between hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine Chloroquine and diazepam

The clinical usefulness of chloroquine, and in some recent cases of quinine as well, has been much reduced by the evolution and spread of chloroquine resistant malaria parasites. The mechanism of resistance involves a reduced accumulation of the drug, although again the mechanism involved is controversial. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® is a 4-amino-quinoline antimalarial medication that is widely used to treat systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, and related inflammatory and dermatological conditions. It is a hydroxylated version of chloroquine, with a similar mechanism of action. Pharmacology Indication Chloroquine is indicated to treat infections of P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and susceptible strains of P. falciparum. 18 It is also used to treat extraintestinal amebiasis. 18

Both drugs may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent the return of infection (relapse). In some cases, you may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to kill the malaria parasites living in other body tissues.
