Any one have any experience or info regarding pre-existing precancerous conditions and the effects of Plaquenil on the immune system. I see so much info on the net where some says that Plaquenil has very mild effect on immune system except for eye issues --- Other info says it is an immunosuppressant. Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory pathways. Howdy LadyDi, sorry you are having problems. Plaquenil is what is call an immune modifier. It is not a immune suppressant. Originally it was used to prevent Malaria. Then it was discovered to be effective for the treatment of Lupus. Plaquenil has the least amount of side affects in treating auto immune disorders.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  4. Hydroxychloroquine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It regulates the activity of the immune system, which may be overactive in some conditions. Hydroxychloroquine can modify the underlying disease process, rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Aug 02, 2010 Basically, the immune system is a bit out of control. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. Unfortunately you can't tell it to attack just the germs so you suppress all of its function to spare your healthy tissue- in your husband's case, his eyes, mouth, throat. NOTE Plaquinil and hydroxychloroquine are essentially the same drug. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more.

Has anyone experienced plaquenil toxicity with damage to eyes? Everything is dark inside and outside is so bright the it is painful to open my eyes. Plaquenil toxicity is not reversible in most cases and continues to progress even after you stop taking it for several month and sometimes years because of the half life of Plaquenil One should see a retina special before taking Plaquenil in my opinion
